 Overeating
 Contributed by Larry Tate

Food Many people overeat by consuming more calories than needed for body maintenance. Your metabolism will work more efficiently if you eat single serving portions (1 cup), consume 3 small meals and eat healthy snacks between them. Never skip breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day and kickstarts your metabolism. Planning your meals on a weekly basis and creating a grocery list before shopping will help you avoid buying unnecessary food items. Avoid fast foods; one fast food meal can deliver half your caloric need for the day. Stay away from sodas and fruit juices high in sugar. Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance and store in the refrigerator for easy access. Remember, you can stop overeating if you plan, plan, plan.

Here are a few tips for eating smaller portions while eating out.

  • Order a chicken sandwich the next time you visit a fast food restaurant. By substituting a grilled chicken sandwich for a cheeseburger with the works, you’ll save about 150 calories.
  • Order only a small order of fries instead of the “super-sized” portion and you’ll save about 300 calories.
  • A small soda has 150 fewer calories than a large one.
  • If you share an entrée with a friend the next time you visit a restaurant, you’ll only eat half as much.
  • Getting an appetizer instead of a main course can help control the amount you eat because appetizers are often much smaller than entrees.
  • Ask for half your meal to be packaged in a “to- go" box, and eat it for lunch the next day.

 Assessing Rising Healthcare Costs

Healthcare We believe engaging and empowering consumers to make knowledgeable healthcare decisions is a fundamental priority. In our rapidly changing healthcare environment, consumers need information that assists them to take an active role in managing self-care for themselves and their families. If we provide consumers with information they understand, then knowledge begins to work for consumers, and we can deliver better, more affordable care in local communities nationwide. Ninety million adults in the United States have difficulty understanding and using healthcare information. Consumers’ main source of health information comes from the internet (69%), and personal physicians (59%).

Healthcare prevention is a proactive approach to healthcare and unfortunately, because businesses are paying the “lion share” of healthcare cost, it is incumbent on employers to take a more active approach to ensure their employees become active in helping them lower healthcare costs and the key to reducing healthcare costs is prevention. Healthcare expenditures are projected to more than double between 2000 and 2010, and healthcare is expected to account for 17% of the Gross Domestic Product by 2010.

There are steps to begin prevention strategies and the first is to conduct hard and soft data Health Risk Assessments. As logical as this might seem, of eighty-four percent of businesses and corporations with 50 or more employees that conduct health related activities, only twelve percent conduct health risk assessments.

A Health Risk Assessment is a guide to identify behaviors putting one at risk for illness and accidents. It is designed to improve health through individual assessments, disease-specific interventions, and management. Assessments provide employers with aggregate data and executive summary reports that yield an overall snapshot of the assessed population. They also provide steps necessary to identify risk for potential increased healthcare costs. The aggregate report provides overall raw numbers and corresponding percentage data from the assessed population. The information is then calculated to identify potential overall risk factors and provide appropriate consultation to address those risks.
